How an Illinois winter cracks a chimney
Every thaw pushes a little more water into a crown or a mortar joint, and every freeze opens the crack a little wider. Three parts keep it out.
A sound crown
Concrete sloped away from the flue tiles, so water runs off instead of soaking into the brick.
A cap on every flue
Rain, snow and birds stay out of the flue, and sparks stay in.
Tight flashing
Metal stepped into the roof line, so water cannot run down behind the chimney.
How a visit works
You call or send the form
We answer every day from 7 am to 9 pm and set a time that suits you.
We protect the room
Drop cloths go over the hearth and the floor before any brush goes up the flue.
We work top to bottom
Cap, crown, flue and firebox, swept or repaired as we agreed.
We tell you what we found
What we saw on the roof and in the flue, what we fixed, and what can safely wait.

Book the sweep before the first cold night
Late summer and early fall are the best time: the flue is dry and the weather is mild for roof work. Already lit the first fire? A sweep now still clears what it left behind.

How often should a chimney be inspected?
NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys and vents, calls for an inspection at least once a year, whether you burn wood, gas or rarely light the fireplace at all. A yearly look catches a cracked crown or a blocked flue before a Chicago-area winter makes it worse.
Do I need a sweep if I only light a few fires a year?
A few fires still leave creosote on the flue walls, and a flue that sits unused collects nests and leaves. A light-use fireplace usually needs less work, but it still needs the yearly look.
Does a gas fireplace need any chimney work?
Yes, less often. Gas leaves no creosote, but nests, leaves and rust can still block the vent. Chimney cleaning covers gas fireplace vents and the caps on top of them.
Water is coming in around my chimney. Can you fix it?
Most leaks around a chimney start at the flashing or at a cracked crown. We trace the water to where it gets in and repair the part that failed, instead of patching the ceiling below.
